A Career in Glass

Have you ever thought about pursuing an apprenticeship in the glass industry? The industry offers numerous exciting career opportunities.

From process technicians in glass technology to technical product designers—the glass industry offers a wide range of technical and business-related apprenticeship programs. Here, we’ll introduce two such apprenticeship programs:

Flat Glass Technologist

Flat glass technicians manufacture a wide variety of glass panes, such as insulated glass, safety glass, and glass for display cases or doors.

In addition to using modern machinery, much of the work is done by hand. For example, the glass must be cut to size and ground; some pieces are sandblasted, while others must be heat-bent. During the manufacturing process, flat glass technicians must continuously monitor the quality of both intermediate and final products.

As such, the profession requires not only manual dexterity but also a high degree of attention to detail. Flat glass technicians work primarily in the manufacturing industry.

Process Technician in Glass Technology

Process technicians specializing in glass technology control, monitor, and optimize the production process for glass products using computer-controlled equipment. They are responsible not only for operating the machines but also for their maintenance and upkeep.

Their duties include mixing raw materials such as sand, soda, and lime, which are then melted in glass tanks or melting furnaces. The glass is then shaped into the desired form through pressing, blowing, spinning, or rolling. After cooling, they finish the surfaces through processes such as polishing, engraving, or mirror-finishing.

In addition, they determine the optimal machine settings, program them, and conduct regular quality controls to ensure the highest precision and product quality.
