Porsche Design Tower Stuttgart relies on ORNILUX® bird protection glass from ISOLAR®

The Porsche Design Tower is Stuttgart’s tallest hotel and office building. Architecturally connected to it is the city’s second Porsche Center, located on a 1,500 square meter exhibition space. Porsche Deutschland, the lifestyle brand Porsche Design, and Bülow AG placed particular emphasis on sustainable architecture in their first joint construction project. The careful selection of building materials, especially the use of multifunctional laminated safety glass for the façade design, underscores the harmonious yet striking appearance of the buildings and combines aesthetics and nature conservation in an innovative way.

Sustainable design and bird protection combined

“The challenge with the Porsche Design Tower was the use of multifunctional impact panes made of laminated safety glass. They must be highly effective against bird strikes while also providing effective solar protection,” explains Albert Schweitzer, Managing Director of Hunsrücker Glasveredelung Wagener, and adds: “The combination of ORNILUX® design lines bird protection glass with the solar control glass SOLARLUX® sunlite grey, with its subtle neutral grey reflection, convinced the client of the Porsche Design Tower Stuttgart, Bülow AG. It also reduces the overall energy input into the building while allowing the highest level of daylight transmission.” The construction of the tower marks a milestone for the company Arnold, as “this project is one of the largest in which ORNILUX® has been installed to date. Specifically, we are talking about over 8,000 square meters.” Of this, around 7,000 square meters are monolithic laminated safety glass (LSG) and another approximately 1,000 square meters of LSG are curved at the corners. “That makes a total of 1,700 individual glass elements,” concludes Schweitzer.

ORNILUX idea originated in the Remstal region

The idea for ORNILUX® bird protection glass was born just a few kilometers from the Porsche Design Tower Stuttgart in the Remstal valley. “Hans Joachim Arnold, the son of company founder Alfred Arnold, had the idea 25 years ago to design a bird protection glass,” says Schweitzer, explaining the composition of the glass: “ORNILUX® comes in many different versions. What they all have in common is that we have incorporated structures into the glass that are sometimes more, sometimes less visible to humans. Birds, however, often perceive them as obstacles and turn away.”

ORNILUX® design lines feature visible markings on level 1 of the glass panes. This unique coating was developed using a new process that replaces the previous screen-printing method. For hotel guests, restaurant visitors, or office tenants, the fine lines will be barely noticeable. The high effectiveness of the markings has already been proven in extensive flight tunnel tests.
