Heavy, curved and installed with maximum precision: our supporting member Heavydrive took on the challenging task of installing large-format, concave curved glass elements for the Mokslo Sala science and innovation centre in Kaunas, Lithuania. The project impressively demonstrates how technical expertise and specialised lifting technology enable precise implementation even in complex architectural projects.
14 curved panes in just ten days
The focus of the work was on 14 concave curved glass elements with impressive dimensions: each pane measured 1.4 metres in width, 7.5 metres in height and weighed around 1,400 kilograms. The glazing was installed in a round inner courtyard under a massive steel structure – a seemingly floating metal disc with a diameter of 21 metres. To master this challenge, Heavydrive relied on a combination of construction crane logistics and precise precision work with an in-house mini crane.
Architecture with a focus on innovation
Designed by the internationally active SMAR Architecture Studio, the Mokslo Sala combines a modern museum, STEAM laboratories, virtual projection rooms, conference areas and catering facilities on approximately 15,000 square metres. The spectacular glass façade is not only an aesthetic shell, but also a functional connecting element between nature, city and science. The transparent design ensures light-flooded rooms with an unobstructed view of the Nemunas River.
Technology that moves
Heavydrive contributed its entire expertise in the field of glass and heavy-duty installation to this project. Thanks to special lifting systems and sophisticated control technology, it was possible to move the sensitive XXL elements safely and position them precisely – all within a tight time frame of just ten days.
A strong collaboration
The project was realised in close collaboration with international partners such as Peikko (Finland) as the supplier of the supporting structure and other local specialist companies. The result: a building that is as visionary as it is functional, reflecting the innovative strength of the Kaunas region in its architectural language.
A big thank you to our supporting member Heavydrive for the outstanding implementation of this challenging project and the impressive example of modern glass installation technology.
