As part of the fundamental refurbishment of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, an impressive demonstration was given of how heritage conservation and modern glass construction technology can be successfully combined.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Mascha Baitinger, now Managing Director of our supporting member Contura Ingenieure GmbH, was the project manager at Verrotec GmbH for this flagship project.

The world-famous museum building by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe underwent extensive renovation between 2015 and 2021 – under the direction of David Chipperfield Architects. The engineers at Verrotec were responsible for central tasks related to quality assurance of glass components and adhesive bonding, far exceeding standard requirements: from third-party monitoring of load-bearing adhesive bonds and the production of large-format laminated safety glass to the supervision and assessment of special solutions requiring official approval (ZiE).

The careful handling of non-standardized glass constructions under heritage preservation and safety requirements makes this project an exemplary reference for sophisticated façade construction in Germany.
