Hybrid Flax Pavilion
State Garden Show Wangen im Allgäu, 2024

The Hybrid Flax Pavilion is a central exhibition structure on the grounds of the State Garden Show, surrounded by the renaturalized Argen river. For the first time, the pavilion showcases a timber-natural fiber hybrid construction as an alternative to conventional building methods, developed by the Cluster of Excellence “Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture” (IntCDC).

This unique structural concept combines slender cross-laminated timber elements with robotically wound flax fiber components, creating a novel, resource-efficient load-bearing system made of regional, bio-based building materials with a strong local connection. Historically, flax was processed in the local textile industry, and the old spinning mill site has been revitalized as part of the garden show.

The wave-shaped roof structure, circular floor plan, and centrally placed climate garden create an immersive space that gently flows into the surrounding landscape. A ground slab made of recycled concrete, which can be thermally activated using geothermal energy, allows for year-round comfortable use of the permanently installed building.

In the glass pavilion, high-performance glass was installed featuring Solarlux A 71 solar protection combined with Mikado bird protection – all supplied by Glas Natter GmbH, based in Regensburg.
