In Cornwall, England, the The Story of Emily Museum<\/a> impressively demonstrates the architectural potential of large-format glass. At the heart of the new building is a panoramic glass fa\u00e7ade measuring almost 20 metres in length. It opens up views of the historic gardens and allows the boundaries between inside and outside to virtually disappear.<\/p>\n

The architectural concept was as clear as it was ambitious: the museum and its adjoining caf\u00e9 were not simply to be embedded in the landscape, but to merge with it. Transparency is the central design element. A continuous glass fa\u00e7ade opens the interior towards the garden, while generous roof glazing directs daylight deep into the building.<\/p>\n

Large-format insulating glass for maximum transparency<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To realise the architectural vision of openness and seamless transitions, sedak<\/strong> manufactured a bespoke insulating glass solution in exceptional dimensions.<\/p>\n

The centrepiece of the project is a panoramic glass unit measuring 19.98 \u00d7 2.80 metres. With a surface area of around 56 square metres, it is one of the largest insulating glass units ever produced in Europe. It provides visitors with an almost unobstructed view of the museum\u2019s historic gardens.<\/p>\n

The fa\u00e7ade glazing is complemented by seven large-format sedak isopure\u00ae<\/strong> insulating glass roof units, each measuring 2.85 \u00d7 5.99 metres. Instead of conventional spacers, transparent glass spacers were used, allowing the joints between the glass units to recede visually into the background.<\/p>\n

The virtually seamless glazing emphasises the lightness of the structure and maximises transparency. Together with the almost 20-metre-long panoramic glass unit, it creates light-filled glass architecture that visually connects the interior with the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n

Precision throughout the entire value chain<\/h3>\n

Large-format glass requires not only the highest level of manufacturing expertise, but also carefully planned logistics. For the project, sedak developed a bespoke packaging and transport concept to ensure that the oversized glass units reached Cornwall safely.<\/p>\n

Just-in-time delivery reduced the amount of storage space required on site while also minimising the risk of transport damage. This ensured that the exceptional glass solution arrived at its destination safely and on schedule.<\/p>\n
